Meelick on the Shannon is approximately 6 kms east of Eyrecourt in County Galway. The river at this point is wide and mysterious with islands, weirs, pools and streams. At its widest point it is over 1½ kms in width. It is approached on the east bank from the town of Banagher via Lusnagh village. The salmon fishing on the east bank is mainly done from a boat which can be launched at the canal mouth and Victoria Lock. Access to the river from the westbank is off the Eyrecourt / Banagher Road at Kilnaborris. Bank fishing is possible on the west side. The water is fast and streamy and wading is possible and necessary in some places. The river here gets occasional spring salmon but it is chiefly regarded as a grilse fishery. Every season produces in the region of 200-300 fish. The grilse appear in early June but it is generally the last week in June before they are in sufficient numbers to attract the angler. To fish this stretch, properly, a boat is essential.
