Luimneach - The Bare Marsh.
Limerick City is a modern, vibrant City at the heart of not only the County but the Shannon Region which extends from the Atlantic Coasts of Clare and Kerry, to the lowlands of the Shannon Valley and to the uplands of the Limerick - Cork and Tipperary County bounds. Its rich heritage and long history can be seen even in its placename Luinmeach. The original gaelic version means 'a bare marsh.' However the Scandinavian version Laenrich or Hylmrek evokes a vision of vikings, who founded Limerick, sailing their long-boats up the river Shannon in the early 9th Century. Limerick City is a freshened up City with much to offer visitors.
