An Gleann Rua - The Red Valley. Glenroe is situated in south east Limerick, along R.512, south of Kilmallock. There was once an ancient and extensive forest of oaks in the valley of Glenroe which was also known as "The Oaks of the Red Valley". In this area places of interest include the ruins of the ancient Church of Darragh, a place formerly known in Irish as Dairtheach Mochua, 'the Oaken House of St. Mochua'. In the graveyard in which the ruins are situated are a number of celtic revival headstones.
In this area other places of interest to visit include Castle Gale Promontory Fort; Carrigeen na Moranta Mill Stone Quarries, home to the very rare Killarney Fern; Tully Ring Fort, a Fulucht Fia (ancient cooking place) on the bank of the Curragheen - These form part of the Sli Finn (Fianna) drive. There are a number of local walks such as the Boreen Dearg and Molanna River walk to be enjoyed.
