Bru na nDeise - The Seat of The Deisi.
Bruff on the morning Star River, is located on the R512 road, 26km South of Limerick, 10 km North of Kilmallock. The name is derived from Bru na Deise, the principal seat or Fort of The Deisi, a people who occupied East Limerick in ancient times. On the approach from Holycross on entering the Town, is the Catholic Church, erected in 1833, an attractive early English style Church. Opposite is an impressive and well maintained War of Independance Memorial (1916 - 1921), erected in 1952, with other important dates in Irish History (1691/1798/ 1803/1867) also noted on the memorial. At the other end of the Town is a Church of Ireland Church (not in use), a well kept riverside amenity area and two schools. 2km South of Bruff is the four storey 15th century Tower House, Ballygrennan Castle, Built by the De Lacy Family, in a good state of preservation.
