Mainistir na Feile - the monastery of the Feale.
Abbeyfeale, on the River Feale, is a busy market town 13km west of the Barna Gap on the N21 road close to the Limerick - Kerry border at Feale's Bridge. The town gets its name from a 12th century house founded by Brian O'Brien in1188 for the Cistercian order. A new Catholic church was built in 183 on the site of the old monastery and it incorporates part of the original structure. The statue in the town square and marketplace is of Fr. William Casey (1844 - 1907), parish priest of Abbeyfeale and champion of the tenant farmers in their fight against landlordism. Northwest of the town on the northern bank of the river Feale are the ruins of Portinard Castle, a 14th century Geraldine castle or tower house built to defend a ford on the Feale below where it is joined by the Oolagh River. The area around Abbeyfeale is noted for its wealth of traditional Irish music.
