Summer Music on the Shannon (SMS) is a truly unique classical music summer school and festival which takes place in University Concert Hall on the beautiful campus of the University of Limerick by the river Shannon in Ireland each July and August.
This year SMS takes place from July 23rd to August 18th. An anticipated 300 classical musicians and music students of all ages from at least 16 countries, will take part in the exciting four-week SMS 2007 programme. SMS welcomes all ages and levels - from juniors to pre-professionals - and many of our students partake with their whole families! The standards of tuition at SMS are exceptionally high with a faculty made up of some of the world's most renowned musicians - including, for example, John Perry (piano, USA) winner of both the Busoni and Viotti international piano competitions and José-Luis Garcia (violin, Spain) former leader of English Chamber Orchestra. Also, for the second year running the fantastic Artane band will be resident during SMS 2007.
There is an exciting range of intensive and creative orchestral, piano, chamber ensemble and performance programmes available, as well as an excellent Youth Opera Theatre programme directed by Ann Cooper Gay (director of the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus). There are also options to experience an introduction to Irish traditional music, percussion improvisation, and English language classes for international students. High standard residential accommodation (supervised for those under 18) is available, as well as access to the University Arena sports centre and its Olympic-size swimming pool, and day-trips on the weekends.
This is a completely unique opportunity for music lovers all over the world to rub shoulders with students and teachers of international standards and to perform in the magnificent 1,000-seater University Concert Hall, as well as St. Mary's Cathedral and The Georgian House in Limerick city.
